I am fascinated by all the black huts painted with tar along the Sussex coastline and this 'Fresh Fish' hut at The Stade Hastings is one of my favourites. It is just yards from the beach where the boats land and surrounded by the tools of the fishing trade and worn plastic buckets and crates.

When we arrive at The Stade Hastings, the gulls swoop, perhaps hoping for food. I sit very still and spot a good character, but when I start to sketch or take photographs, the gull moves on. The 'Goodbye Gull' is what happens when I try to paint seagulls.

This year I have trawled my local coastline for inspiration. I return often to paint the tall black fishing net huts at The Stade Hastings. We holiday in a beach bungalow that leads onto the broad expanse of sand at Winchelsea. A walk away is Rye Nature Reserve with its shingle beach fields and birds, leading to the exposed Rye Harbour. Further east is the fascinating Dungeness and Derek Jarman's home 'Prospect Cottage' and garden.

In 2010 we stayed in a secluded beach bungalow that with a hop over a high shingle ridge led directly onto the broad expanse of sand at Winchelsea Beach. We visited in early spring and walked the hounds on the shingle and sand beach at dawn. Most of the beaches in Sussex are pebble, so it is a joy to have found a sandy oasis.

This year I have been a regular visitor to Derek Jarman's home 'Prospect Cottage' and garden in Dungeness. Having battled with creating a coastal garden on a clifftop, I am familiar with a lot of the plants he has used and in awe at their survival in this exposed site. In the first instance I painted 'Prospect Cottage' from different viewpoints. This painting is the view from the back of the cottage and garden looking west. Wooden groins mark the boundaries and The Old Lighthouse stands proud with its black and white paint on the horizon.
